FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University Student Government Association President David Gunn has been sworn in as the student member on the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System. His term will last for one year.

Gunn will be a full-voting member of the board which oversees eight public universities in Louisiana including Northwestern.

"I look forward to working with David over the next year," said board president Andre Coudrain of Hammond. "His insight from a student's perspective will be valuable to all of the members of the Board of Supervisors."

Students have been full members of the state's four higher education management boards since 1975. A student also sits on the Louisiana Board of Regents, the LSU Board of Supervisors and the Southern University System Board of Supervisors. The student member of the Board of Regents is selected by SGA presidents at all public institutions in the state. SGA presidents from each system choose the student member on each respective management board.

"I look forward to the opportunity to serve on the board and provide a voice for the students," said Gunn. "The board deals with so many issues affecting students. I felt good about having the confidence of my fellow student government presidents."

Gunn was elected SGA president in March. He is the fourth Northwestern student chosen as a board member. NSU Student Government Association Presidents Joe Stamey, Johnny Cox and Carlton Downey also served on the board.

Prior to taking the oath of office, Gunn worked with staff from the University of Louisiana System to become familiar with the duties and responsibilities of board members as well as issues facing the board.

"David is taking on a very important responsibility serving as the student's voice on the Board of Supervisors," said system President Bobby Jindal. "It is important for our board to have a student member to represent the 80,000 students in the University of Louisiana System."

Gunn succeeds TiJean Rodriguez of Southeastern Louisiana University as the student member on the Board of Supervisors.

"TiJean did an outstanding job. He gained the respect of the board members and represented the students well," said Gunn. "I've maintained contact with him and feel ready to take on the responsibility."
