NATCHITOCHES - Sixteen Louisiana educators have been selected to participate in the Louisiana Heritage Education Program (LHEP). The educators, who teach fourth and eighth grades, were recommended by principals and supervisors as the best candidates for the program.
The Louisiana Heritage Education Program is the result of a
partnership
between the National Park Service's National Center for Preservation
Technology and Training (NCPTT) and Northwestern State University.
The goals of the program are to enhance students' academic achievement,
promote stewardship of Louisiana's historic sites, and serve as
a national model for heritage education.
To assist in achieving those goals, the teachers participated
in the LHEP
Summer Teachers' Institute hosted by NCPTT. They worked on developing
cultural resources information and computer technology into curriculum-based
lessons
that will be piloted in their fourth and eighth grade classrooms
during the 2001-02 school year.
Eighth grade teachers selected were: Deedra Bignar, Nebo Elementary School, Jena; Robert A. Carnline Natchitoches Junior High, Natchitoches; Kim Cormier, Belle Place Middle School New Iberia; Bobby H. Escudé, Youree Drive Middle School, Shreveport; Susan Stephens Lambert, West Feliciana Middle School, St. Francisville; Richard J. McClure, Block High School, Jonesville; Paul Stuker, Loranger Middle School, Loranger; Angel N. White, Ferriday Junior High School, Ferriday;
Fourth grade teachers selected were: Deborah Buco, Galvez Elementary, Prairieville; Monica H. Coates, Grayson Elementary School, Grayson; Glinda M. Doucet, Bunkie Elementary School, Bunkie; Tricia A. Dugas, Baldwin Elementary, Baldwin; Linda Ferrington, Winnsboro Upper Elementary, Winnsboro; Margaret Crosby Hall, East Natchitoches Elementary, Natchitoches; Christy I. Flynn, Olla Elementary, Olla and Penny F. McDaniel, James Stephens Elementary, Ville Platte.
Representatives of the Cane River Creole National Historical
Park, the Louisiana Division of Archaeology, Louisiana Division
of Historic Preservation and the Region VI Teaching, Learning,
Technology Center along with staff from NSU and NCPTT will be
