NATCHITOCHES- Ten Northwestern State University students attended the American Humanics Management Institute convention in San Antonio recently.
The convention is a requirement for the American Humanics Certification program offered through the University College to certify nonprofit professionals.
"The convention put us in several real-life situation that will help us in a career in nonprofit leadership," said Wes Breeden, a senior from Pride. "We learned about strategic planning, technology in the workplace, communication and interviewing skills."
The American Humanics is a national alliance with college, university and nonprofit organizations preparing undergraduates for careers with youth and human service organizations. The colleges and universities partnered with American Humanics provide the use of their facilities and faculty by offering the program. NSU's program is provided through cooperation with the American Humanics Program at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.
"American Humanics provides wonderful opportunities for success in many different nonprofit fields," said Chuck McBee, a graduate student from Shreveport. "The program insures that its graduates are competent in all aspects of nonprofit leadership."
Students who attended include Molly Beach of Lafayette, Marissa Fernbaugh and Judy Daniels of Campti, Erin Dudley of Coushatta, Breeden, Kyle Davis of Haughton, McBee, Lesley Myers of Natchitoches, Rob Morgan of Jena and Kelli Ouso of Plaquemine.
"I want to work with larger corporation in the philanthropy field," said Beach. "I am in the program to understand both sides of the field."
