FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Augustine M. Amenyah and Dr. L.J. Clark of the College of Education at Northwestern State University recently gave a presentation at the African Americans in Higher Education 14th Professional Development Forum held at Grambling State University.
Amenyah is an assistant professor of adult education and Clark is an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction.
The presentation, "Inclusion Strategies for Enhancing Minority Academic Success at PWIs" (Predominately White Institutions).
Amenyah and Clark focused on strategies that enhanced the academic success of minority students. The strategies included mentoring, peer groups, open discussion of minority scholarship, history and affirmation, academic enhancement and enrichment programs, weekly coffee engagements and more.
"We discussed things that we have used in our classes
that have been successful," said Amenyah. "We engage
students, mentor them and try to get them to participate. The
more we engage them one on one, the more they participate and
stop being backbenchers. That concern and respect shows we are
interested in their work and leads to higher student achievement."
