FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-The 26th annual Journalism Day at Northwestern State University was a huge success as students from 18 high schools from as far away as Lafourche Parish attended.
Approximately 300 students attended the event, according to Mary Brocato, coordinator of Journalism Day and assistant professor of Journalism at NSU.
Brocato said the aim of the event is to attempt to have dynamic, knowledgeable speakers and workshop presenters each year. This year, Bob Cashen, news director at KSLA TV and Mark Goodman, executive director of the Student Press Law Center were keynote speakers. Mario Villafuerte, State Rep. Taylor Townsend and lobbyist Randall Womack taught workshops on public relations and photojournalism.
"Both students and advisers thought these speakers really
provided information
about journalism that they did not previously know," said
Brocato. "From the evaluation forms, the students were impressed
with the workshops and thought they learned a lot about journalism
careers."
The Department of Journalism is already planning next year's program and hope to include workshops on sports journalism, print journalism and new media (Internet).
