NATCHITOCHES - Five current or former Northwestern State University journalism students won awards at the 15th Annual Southeastern Journalism Conference held recently in Columbus, Miss. The SEJC consists of nearly 50 schools in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.
NSU won the top two awards in television documentaries. Joanie Naquin of New Orleans and John Chambers of Shreveport won first place in television documentaries. Naquin, a recent graduate, examined fraternity and sorority hazing while Chambers documentary was on binge drinking.
In the category, each student produced an in-depth investigation of a controversial subject then combined their piece with another student's work to create a 30-minute magazine program.
Michael Addison of Alexandria and Tim Long of Fort Worth, Texas, finished second in documentaries. Addison's work focused on students who revealed they are gay while in college. Long, a December graduate, did an examination of attention deficit disorder.
Josh Green of Alexandria finished second in the television newscast category.
Four of the students, Naquin, Chambers, Addison and Long, took a journalism class on advanced television reporting taught by Assistant Professor of Journalism Mary Brocato.
Broadcast journalism students at Northwestern produce a newscast aired twice a week on Cox Cable Channel 22 in Natchitoches and Channel 21 on the Northwestern campus. Green is a co-anchor on the newscast. The students also produce interview shows, documentaries and other campus programming.
