FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-The Department of Journalism at Northwestern
State University received a good report following a recent evaluation
by a site visit team of the Accrediting Council on Education in
Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). The team found the
department is in compliance with all 12 accrediting standards,
ranging from budget to diversity.
According to Dr. Steve Horton, head of the Department of Journalism,
the site visit team identified the strengths of the department
as being "an energetic and effective administrator, faculty
and staff; being successful in on going financial support for
programmatic activities; having enthusiastic majors and minors
and having a congenial relationship between the faculty and students."
"My own perception of this review is that our faculty, staff and students in journalism have done on outstanding job in bringing that level of achievement and Dr. Steve Horton had directed great leadership skills in that area, " said NSU President Dr. Randall J. Webb.
The site visit team will recommend full re-accreditation for
the Journalism Department to the national Accrediting Committee
of ACEJMC, who will receive the report at its March 2003 meeting
in Chicago. The committee will make their recommendation to the
Accrediting Council at its May 2003 meeting in San Jose, Calif.
With an affirmative vote of the Council, the department would
be re-accredited for the next six years, with the next site visit
scheduled for 2008.
The appointed members of the ACEJMC team were: Hampden H. Smith
III, chair of the ACEJMC team and a professor in the Department
of Journalism and Mass Communication at Washington and Lee University
in Lexington, Va; Cathryn Gibbs-Harris, director of communications
at the West Virginia-American Water Company in Charleston, W.Va.;
and Dr. Sherrie Mazingo, professor in the School of Journalism
and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota.
