FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-The Department of Journalism at Northwestern State University received a recommendation for re-accreditation at the Accrediting Committee meeting of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication held recently in Chicago. The department was also commended for its work in assessment.
Northwestern was represented at the meeting by Dr. Steve Horton, head of the Department of Journalism, and the department's site visit team chair, Hampden Smith, chair of the Department of Journalism at Washington and Lee University.
According to Horton, the committee concurred with the site team's finding of the Journalism department to be in compliance on all 12 standards. Some of those standards are curriculum, administration, advising, facilities, internships, graduates and diversity.
The accrediting committee will recommend re-accreditation to the Council at its meeting in San Jose, Calif. in early May. Final decision rests with the Council's recommendation.
"For us and NSU to be so assessment-oriented, this commendation reflects the current administration, faculty and staff," Horton said. "We are a university that recognizes that change is good, we are constantly aware of what's going on around us and we adapt to that change."
