FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES- Approximately 400 prospective students and their parents received the most up to date information on Northwestern State University at the recent Junior Day. According to April Jordan, assistant director of university recruiting for high school relations at NSU, student attendance increased by 42 percent and total attendance was up by almost 35 percent over last year.
"We were very pleased by the attendance at Junior Day," said Jordan. "Those who participate in Junior Day are the top students who spend a great deal of time and effort making their college choice. It is a positive sign that so many of these students have Northwestern on their list."
Junior Day is for students who will be entering college in the fall of 2005. This incoming class will be the first who will be required to meet new admissions standards for Louisiana four-year universities.
Those standards include completion of the Louisiana Board of Regents high school core curriculum. The standards also include a high school grade point average of 2.0, or an ACT score of 20, or high school graduation rank in the top 50 percent and the requirement of no more than one remedial course.
"These students are aware of the new standards and that they must be prepared in order to be admitted to Northwestern for the fall of 2005," said Jordan. "During our student panel discussion, there were a lot of questions about academic programs. They were interested in what NSU has to offer academically."
Jordan said Northwestern has hosted Freshman Fairs for the last two years to let prospective students know about the new standards. University recruiters have also emphasized the changes in meetings with students.
"We have been out there promoting the changes," said Jordan. "Northwestern wants students to be prepared. The students who attended will be."
