FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - The Northwestern State University Department of Journalism will remember one of its past students and help prepare current students for the future during J.U.M.P Week Oct. 18-21.
J.U.M.P week is presented by Northwestern's student chapters of the National Association of Black Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists and Public Relations Student Society of America. J.U.M.P (Journalists Unifying to Make Progress) Week is dedicated to bringing speakers from different journalistic fields to discuss with students their future careers and the qualities of responsibility, leadership and teamwork in journalism. These qualities can help students "jump" from a collegiate to a professional level.
Proceeds from J.U.M.P Week will go toward a scholarship for Northwestern journalism students named in memory of Rondray Hill, a journalism student at NSU. Hill was editor of the student newspaper, the Current Sauce, in 2001-2002 and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Hill, who was from Shreveport, died suddenly of a heart attack in 2002.
Speakers include Nordia Higgins, HealthCast Reporter for KLSA-TV in Shreveport on Monday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. in Room 305 of Kyser Hall. Her talk is sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists.
On Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m., the Society of Professional Journalists will present Rod Richardson, managing editor of The Shreveport Times in Room 142 of Kyser Hall.
The Public Relations Students Society Of America will present Michael Thompson, corporate public relations and Speakers Bureau manager of the New Orleans Hornets Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. in Room 142.
Each talk is free and open to the public.
The final event of the week will be The Rondray Hill Scholarship Fund auction and banquet on Thursday, Oct. 21 in the Friedman Student Union Ballroom. The Ballroom doors open at 6 p.m. with the banquet at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at $20 each. Table sponsorships are $160.
Donations to the scholarship fund can be made before and after all scheduled forums.
