FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Julie Kane, associate professor of English at Northwestern State University, has been selected as a recipient of a Louisiana Division of the Arts Artist Mini-Grant for the 2004-2005 year.

Artist Mini-Grants are designed to encourage artistic development, to support the realization of specific artistic ideas and to recognize the significant contributions artists make to the creative environment of Louisiana. The grants are available for Louisiana individual artists with unique professional development needs. They are designed to support specific activities related to the artist's work and career.

Kane will use the grant to go toward costs of attending the annual West Chester University Poetry Conference in June in West Chester, Pa.

"This is a very distinguished conference for new formalist poets," said Kane. "The conference will include readings and panel discussions. I look forward to attending the conference and learning from some of the poets who are participating."

Kane is the 2004 recipient of the Mildred Hart Bailey Research Award at NSU. She was honored for her work, including the book, "Rhythm & Booze," which was a winner of the National Poetry Series Open Competition. In 2002, she received a Fulbright Lectureship in Creative Writing/American Studies (Poetry) and spent the Spring 2002 semester in Vilnius, Lithuania.
