FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES A poem by Northwestern State University Associate Professor of English Dr. Julie Kane has been included in Kiss and Part: Laughing at the End of Romance & Other Entanglements, a new anthology of humorous poems about breaking up.
The book was edited by Gail White of Breaux Bridge, who is widely considered one of the best writers of light verse, with illustrations by Dale Wilkins. Doggerel Daze of Cupertino, Calif., is the publisher.
Other writers included in the volume are Dorothy Parker, John Updike, Richard Wilbur, A. E. Housman, W. S. Gilbert (of Gilbert and Sullivan) and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
"I feel as if anyone who has ever been dumped can appreciate the works in this volume," said Kane. "The poems manage to find humor in a plight that was not humorous at the time. As Gail White said in her introduction, 'As soon as the piece of lost perfection appears in his or her true slimeball colors, the healing process of laughter can begin.'''
Kane said was honored to have a poem included in a book with so many well-known writers.
"Many of these poets, such as Dorothy Parker of Edna St. Vincent Millay, were people I read as a child and wanted to be like," said Kane. "To be in the same anthology with them is a treat."
Kane is a finalist for one of the major prizes in American poetry, The Poets' Prize for the Best Collection of American Poetry. The award will be presented May in New York.
A previous winner of the National Poetry Open Series Competition, Kane was honored for her collection "Rhythm & Booze," which was published by the University of Illinois Press.
Kane has also been invited to attend a poetry festival in Lithuania in May. In 2002, Kane held a Fulbright Lectureship in Linguistics/Creative Writing in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Another poem by Kane was included in a volume, Points of Gold, a series of poems in honor of Leo Luke Marcello, an acclaimed poet who is on the faculty of McNeese State University. The book was published by the Xavier University Press. Kane will read her published poem as part of a ceremony in Lake Charles on Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Stream Alumni Center. Many of the poets featured in the volume will present readings.
