NATCHITOCHES ­Applications are being accepted through April 15 for the John, Thelma and Janet Kyser Endowed Scholarship at Northwestern State University.

The four-year, $500 per semester scholarship will be awarded to a freshman Louisiana resident who graduated from a high school in the state with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and an ACT score of 19 or better. The recipient can be in any major within the School of Social Sciences and must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0.

Applications should be mailed to Kyser Scholarship Committee, School of Social Sciences, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA 71497.

The scholarship was established by Thelma Kyser in 1997. Kyser, who died in 1998, was the wife of John S. Kyser, who was president of Northwestern from 1954 until 1966. A pioneer in the teaching of women's physical education, Thelma Kyser was a faculty member at Louisiana State Normal School (now Northwestern) from 1922 until 1940. She was named to the NSU Hall of Distinction, the Long Purple Line, and received an honorary doctorate of humanities from Northwestern.
