NATCHITOCHES- Applications are being accepted through Feb. 15 for the John, Thelma and Janet Kyser Endowed Scholarship at Northwestern State University.
The four-year, $500 per semester scholarship will be awarded to a freshman Louisiana resident who graduated from a high school in the state with a grade point average of at least 3.0 and an ACT score of 19 or better. The recipient must be majoring in either anthropology, criminal justice, history, political science, sociology, or general social science and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0.
The application should contain a brief essay on the subject "Why the Social Sciences are Important" along with a transcript. No letters of recommendation are required. Applications should be mailed to Kyser Scholarship Committee, Department of Social Sciences, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, LA 71497.
The scholarship was established by Thelma Kyser in 1997. Kyser,
who died in 1998, was the wife of John S. Kyser, who was president
of Northwestern from 1954 until 1966. A pioneer in the teaching
of women's physical education, Thelma Kyser was a faculty member
at Louisiana State Normal School (now Northwestern) from 1922
until 1940. She was a member of the NSU Hall of Distinction, the
Long Purple Line, and received an honorary doctorate of humanities
from Northwestern.
