NATCHITOCHES-Friday and Saturday nights at the 23rd annual Natchitoches-Northwestern Folk Festival will offer a variety of music to please any ear. The Festival will be held July 19-20 in Prather Coliseum at Northwestern State University.
Friday night music attractions will be Jay Cormier and Cajun Country, The Natchitoches Jazz Orchestra and Maggie Warwick. The Festival will host Bernie Alan and Knight Train, Glenn Jacqueneaux and Jackpot and Sugarloaf Swing on Saturday night.
Jay Cormier and Cajun Country is the house band for the popular South Louisiana restaurant, Mulates, and is noted for its outstanding four-part harmony which is incorporated into their Cajun French songs.
The Natchitoches Jazz Orchestra will present "Big Band Music at the Festival," playing a variety of musical favorites from the 40's.
Back by popular demand is Maggie Warwick. Warwick's influence on Louisiana's music has been long celebrated for keeping the Louisiana Hayride Band alive for 30 years.
Bernie Alan and Knight Train is an Alexandria-based group whose music includes both country and Cajun favorites. They play everything from Zydeco and Zydecajun to swamp pop and blues.
Sugarloaf Swing will offer toe-tapping western swing music. This band is made up of Gene Gasaway, Daryl Pace, Buddy Baker, John Reynolds and J.R. Baker, all musicians who work with other bands, but enjoy playing together.
Rocque's Blues Band will close out the evenings with their popular blues music.
Events begin Friday, July 19 at noon and Saturday, July 20 at 10 a.m. A two-day all-event pass will sell for $12 and $5 for children age 7-12. The all-event pass must be purchased before the Festival. Tickets for individual days will be sold at the Festival and are priced at $7 for adults and $3 for children 7-12, children 6 and under are free. Evening passes are $5 after 6 p.m. each day and $3 for children 7-12.
