NATCHITOCHES -The Louisiana Council of Teachers of English (LCTE) will have their Fall Conference Oct. 27-28 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Alexandria.
The conference name this year is "Nuts and Bolts of Teaching:
Practical Strategies for Classroom Success." The keynote
speaker is Hope Norman Coulter, author of two published novels,
The Errand of the Eye and Dry Bones, and one children's
book, Uncle Chuck's Truck, and short stories and poems
published in literary magazines.
Coulter, a native of New Orleans, grew up in Alexandria. A Harvard
University honor graduate, she now lives in Little Rock with her
husband and three children. She teaches creative writing at Hendrix
College.
Louisiana teachers will receive CLU's or professional development credit, for attending. Conference registration is $45 for first year teachers and students and $95 for regular professionals. Mail check and registration forms to Cieltia Adams, Treasurer, 126B Charlotte St., Gray, LA 70359. Teachers can also register at the door from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 27 and from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Oct. 28.
Breakout sessions appropriate for all levels of teachers are an important part of the conference. Northwestern State University's National Writing Project Team will present a two-hour workshop Saturday afternoon after the Keynote luncheon.
There will be two sessions Friday afternoon and an evening of poetry beginning at 7 p.m. at the Alexandria Museum of Art. The featured poetry reading will be by Dr. Steve Jackson, followed by open mic readings of original work or favorite poems.
Saturday morning sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until noon.
Among the presenters will be Dr. Rocky Colavito of Northwestern State, Mayme Stone Strange of Central High School in Grand Cane, Dr. Bernard Gallaher and Kimberly Emore of LSU-Alexandria Brenda Parmley of Alexandria Middle Magnet and Joseph Achowalogen Tullier, of Grant High School and NSU and educator Walter Brown of Shreveport, Jackie Jackson of Nicholls State and Paralee Norman of Northwestern will discuss teaching English online.
Two full scholarships for the conference (registration, hotel room, and gasoline) are still available for the first two applicants who who suffered some financial infringement at home last year due to Katrina or Rita and contact Norman at (337) 239-0864. The scholarships are funded by the New York Council of Teachers of English and by the National Council of Teachers of English.
