FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - A leaky roof has caused officials at Northwestern State University to close the A.A. Fredericks Auditorium for several weeks.

Staff in NSU's Physical Plant were recently notified some plaster in the auditorium had fallen. An inspection by roofing contractors indicated the roof over the old wing of the A.A. Fredericks Center for Creative and Performing Arts had developed a leak. The auditorium was immediately closed and several events scheduled in the facility over the next several weeks were moved.

The next step, according to Facilities Coordinator W.K. Norman, is to get temporary repairs. He said the repairs should be done in time for the April 26-29 production of "Kismet."

"We are working with contractors to make temporary modifications to the roof to ensure safety and to allow continued use of the auditorium," said Norman. "Because of the type of roof over that area, it is extremely difficult to do visual inspections and find out about such problems. You have to cut into the roof to find out there is a leak."

Norman said Physical Plant staff are working with the Louisiana Office of Facility Planning Control to receive authorization to place a new roof over the Performing Arts Center.
