NATCHITOCHES - Applications are now being accepted for the Marion Loftin Scholarship at Northwestern State University. The Loftin Scholarship is for sociology majors at NSU.

Entering freshman, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. The scholarship may be awarded for more than one year if recipients maintain their eligibility. More than one scholarship can be awarded during an academic year.

Loftin died in July 1997. After earning his bachelor's degree at Louisiana State Normal College in 1935, he went on to earn a master's degree at Louisiana State University and a doctorate at Vanderbilt University.

He joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 1949 as an assistant professor. Loftin was named vice president of graduate studies and research in 1979, serving in that position until his retirement in 1985. He was a Thomas L. A $245,000 donation from Loftin's estate to the NSU Foundation established the scholarship.
