NATCHITOCHES - Applications are now being accepted for the Marion Loftin Scholarship at Northwestern State University. The Loftin Scholarship is for sociology majors at NSU.
Entering freshman, sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. Requirements for the scholarship are a 3.0 grade point average for returning students or an ACT score of at least 21 for first time freshmen. The application for this semester is due March 15 with the award presented on April 20. The deadline for the fall semester is April 1.
The scholarship may be awarded for more than one year if recipients
maintain their eligibility. More than one scholarship can be awarded
during an academic year.
Loftin died in July 1997. After earning his bachelor's degree
at Louisiana State Normal College in 1935, he went on to earn
a master's degree at Louisiana State University and a doctorate
at Vanderbilt University.
He joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 1949 as an assistant professor. Loftin was named vice president of graduate studies and research in 1979, serving in that position until his retirement in 1985. He was a Thomas L. Bailey Professor of Sociology and Rural Life, head of the sociology department and dean of the graduate school.
A $245,000 donation from Loftin's estate to the NSU Foundation established the scholarship.
