FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Applications are being accepted for the Marion Loftin Scholarship in Sociology at Northwestern State University. The scholarship is $500 per semester and can be awarded to any incoming freshman planning to major in sociology or a current sociology major at Northwestern.
Continuing students must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 to be considered. Entering freshman must have a minimum composite ACT score of 21 to apply and be a declared sociology major.
Grade point averages will be used to narrow down the final choices. More than one scholarship may be awarded during an academic year. Recipients may continue to receive the scholarship if they continue their good academic record as sociology majors.
Loftin was a 1935 graduate of Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern State) and went on to earn a master’s degree at Louisiana State University and a doctorate at Vanderbilt University.
He joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 1949 as an assistant professor. Loftin was named vice president of graduate studies and research in 1979, serving in that position until his retirement in 1985. He was a Thomas L. Bailey Professor of Sociology and Rural Life, head of the sociology department and dean of the graduate school.
Loftin passed away in 1997. His fond memories of Natchitoches resulted in a gift to the NSU Foundation to assist sociology majors.
To apply, send evidence of eligibility in a letter stating your interest by July 1 to: Marion Loftin Scholarship in Sociology, School of Social Sciences, Northwestern State University, Natchitoches LA 71497.
