FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES – Five men have been selected as the charter inductees of the Louisiana Loggers Hall of Fame. The first class of inductees are J.A. Auger, of J.A. Auger Logging, Inc. of Farmerville, Eugene Hubbard, a semi-retired logging contractor from Winnfield, the late Glenn Futch, who was a logging contractor from Winnfield, J.L. Allen, a retired logging contractor from Joyce and G.J. (Pie) Martinez of Zwolle, a logging contractor and timber man.
The five will be honored at an induction ceremony to be held in conjunction with the Natchitoches/NSU Folk Festival on Saturday, July 21 at 7 p.m. in the “N-Club” Room of Prather Coliseum. The event is sponsored by the Piney Woods Journal of Dodson.
“The Loggers Hall of Fame idea has been around for the past three years or so, and we moved to sponsor it to recognize loggers who have made contributions to the techniques of logging, and also to their communities, through innovation and hard work,” said Tom Kelly, editor and publisher of The Piney Woods Journal. “Loggers are the backbone of the forest industry, which is the second largest employer in Louisiana. One of the goals of The Piney Woods Journal is to bring the story of forestry, its history and its future, to the general public, because many people not connected directly with the industry do not understand its importance and the contribution the industry makes to the economy, to the environment and to the general welfare of our state.”
The search for future inductees into the Louisiana Loggers Hall of Fame is ongoing. Memorabilia, including photographs, oral histories, documents and other artifacts, will be housed at the offices of The Piney Woods Journal. Kelly said other individuals who have made significant contributions to the forest industry would also be recognized from time to time.
