FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-Mary Nell Lott has been appointed Coordinator
of the Space Science Group (SSG) at Northwestern State University.
Lott has a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and Instruction
with concentration in the area of educational technology. She
has extensive experience in gifted education and classroom teaching
of all subjects on the elementary and junior high levels.
Lott has also taught undergraduate and graduate courses in computer
literacy and computer applications at Northwestern.
"I am very excited to be part of a group which is using
cutting edge, next generation technologies to serve science students,"
said Lott.
The Space Science Group was founded in 1992 by Dr. Austin L. Temple, Jr., dean of the College of Science and Technology, to develop and present programs that promote an understanding and a positive attitude toward basic science, mathematics and engineering systems.
"Being aware of low achievement and interest in middle school science students, I wanted to offer something more than the typical read the chapter, answer questions, take a test method that is used in many classes," said Temple.
The following SSG programs use technology to promote understanding and make science courses more enjoyable for the students:
"Science: Out of this World" (SOOTW) is an award winning distance learning course that addresses Louisiana and National middle schools benchmarks and teaches basic scientific principles in a way that is attractive and motivational.
Camp Discovery is a weeklong day camp consisting of computer based activities that offers students experience in using various computer programs to design web sites and graphics.
Practice Run is a LEAP/GEE test preparation program developed by the SSG and is offered online and on compact disc. Practice Run includes more than 1,500 sample math and science LEAP test questions, test standards, test taking tips and test dates.
The SSG is committed to fully exploring and developing cutting edge applications for schools. For more information please visit www.spacesciencegroup.org or e-mail at ssg@nsula.edu.
