FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -The MAHR (Master of Art in Heritage Resources) Fall Public Lecture Series at Northwestern State University will begin with a lecture by NSU faculty member Dr. Julie Ernstein on Monday, Oct. 2. The series will include three lectures, each at 6 p.m. in Room 142 of Kyser Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Ernstein, an assistant professor of anthropology at NSU, will discuss "Culture, Landscapes, and Identity: Linking People and Place." Her lecture is a story of landscape, self-fashioning, nostalgia, and identity formation-there's even a murder involved. Ernstein will explain why the suburban landscape is a whole lot more interesting than you think.

Carolyn Brackett, senior program associate of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Heritage Tourism Program will present a lecture on Monday, Oct. 23, "Heritage Tourism: Saving Our Past and Sharing It with Visitors." Studies show that heritage travelers stay longer and spend more money than other kinds of travelers. A good heritage tourism program also improves the quality of life for residents and Brackett will explain how this is accomplished.

On Monday, Nov. 27, Derek Galose, Historic Preservation Specialist for FEMA along with NSU heritage resources graduate student Chelsea Klein, a FEMA intern, will talk about the role FEMA plays in preserving historic sites in disaster areas in a lecture, "FEMA: Historic Preservation in Disaster Areas."
