FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -Crystal Mallett of Alexandria, a student from Northwestern State University who is a member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the organization. Mallett earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education at Northwestern in 2005 through a joint program between the College of Education and the Louisiana Scholars' College. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in special education with emphasis in teaching gifted children.

This fall, Mallett will begin her second year teaching honors and gifted English, reading and computers to seventh and eighth grade students at Pineville Junior High.

"When I was a methods student at Northwestern, I taught a sixth grade gifted class at NSU Middle Lab and I knew that was what I wanted to do," Mallett said.

Mallett took nine graduate hours on-line this summer and will take six more hours on-line this fall. She hopes to complete her degree next August and intends to stay in the central Louisiana area.

"As an undergraduate, I took as much opportunity as possible to become certified in as many areas as I could. Then I realized the certification I needed to teach gifted children would require a master's degree, so this scholarship will help me pursue what I love, which is working with gifted children."

Each year, through its Educational Foundation, Kappa Delta Pi makes available to its more than 45,000 members in over 500 chapters around the country the opportunity to compete for 50 scholarships. These scholarships, which range from $500 to $4,000, are intended to help undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students pursue their studies in the field of education.

This year, more applications were received than ever before for these scholarships. A committee of professional educators evaluated the applications based on the following criteria: completeness of application, essay content, service to the Society, academic record, and need.

Founded in 1911, Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, is a dynamic learning community that recognizes and enhances growth in scholars and leaders. Students and professionals who have demonstrated scholarly achievement, a commitment to excellence, and have chosen education as a career are invited to join the prestigious honor society. More information about Kappa Delta Pi scholarships is available at www.kdp.org. Applications for 20072008 scholarships will be available to download beginning September 15.
