FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES-James Manuel of New Orleans, an art major at Northwestern State University, will present his senior show Nov. 15-19 in the Orville Hanchey Gallery on the NSU campus. The show will include 25 pieces of mixed-media abstract paintings, drawings and sculpture that focus on the forgotten members of society, Manuel said.

"You could call it a depiction of the subculture of impoverished people, the people you don't think about, but do exist, like the homeless. It's dark," Manuel said. Most pieces in the collection are simplistic abstract figures that represent those in the forgotten subculture and their emotions sadness, pain, sorrow and loneliness."

Manuel used tempera, oils, acrylics, pencil, pastels, plaster and Styrofoam to create the sinister paintings and drawings. Metal, wood and plaster were used for sculptures.

"I'm trying to make people think about those who are forgotten, those sleeping in alleys and there's nobody there to help them out," Manuel said. "It's hard to believe that's going on in America."

Manuel will host a reception from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15 downstairs in the gallery.
