NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Mauricy Martin, professor and chair of the Piano Department at the State University of Campinas of Brazil, will present two recitals at Northwestern State University.
Martin will perform in a solo recital on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. He will also take part in a recital with NSU Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Russell Hirshfield, Charles Jones of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts and Claudia Knafo of New York City on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall.
During his solo recital, Martin will perform works by Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and Ginastera. The program on Feb. 10 will include a variety of pieces by Spanish and South American composers.
Martin is an active performer in major cities and at music festivals throughout Brazil. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with many of Brazil's principal orchestras. His U.S. concert experience includes performances in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Indianapolis and Boston. Martin received his master's degree from Indiana University and his Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University where he was a classmate of Hirshfield's.
He will be at Northwestern as part of an exchange program, teaching private lessons and classes in addition to the performances. Last November, Hirshfield was at the State University of Campinas for two weeks. The faculty change was funded under the Magale Endowed Professorship.
"Our students will have the opportunity to work with a musician of international stature," said Hirshfield. "The experience will reinforce previous lessons and encourage and guide them to a higher level."
Hirshfield said his experience in Brazil gave him the opportunity to learn about the country's music education system and the repertoire of Brazilian composers. He also was able to teach piano students performing at a high level.
Both recitals are free and open to the public.
