FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES- The Department of Mathematics at Northwestern
State University will host the second annual High School Math
Competition on Saturday, Oct. 30. The two-part competition is
open to teams and/or individuals in ninth-12th grade.
In the individual competition, students take a written test created
by NSU math instructors. First, second and third places are award.
First place winner receives a $1,000 scholarship to attend NSU
with a major in science or technology, a trophy and a calculator.
Second and third place winners each receive a trophy and a calculator.
The team competition is modeled after Quiz Bowl with students quickly responding to math questions. Teams consisting of five students include four competitors and an alternate. Schools are allowed an A team and a B team. The winners receive individual plaques and medals and a traveling trophy.
The competition is being sponsored by Texas Instruments, Sabine State Bank and Addison-Wesley. Texas Instruments will present a workshop for teachers who bring teams entitled "Whet Your APPetite: An Introduction to the TI-83/84Plus, APPS and the TI Navigator." The workshop will take place during the morning written test for students.
During last year's debut competition, 22 students from Many High, Pleasant Hill High, Pelican High and Zwolle High participated. Many High won the overall competition.
"The first year was a test," Assistant Professor of Mathematics Elizabeth Cole said. "This year, we're pushing into Shreveport and Monroe. We hope to have two new divisions, a large school division and a small school division." Cole said organizers hope the event will grow into a state-wide competition and reach into east Texas.
