NATCHITOCHES - Actor Michael McCarty will hold a workshop for Northwestern State University theatre students Monday, Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. in Theatre West. The workshop is open to the public. He will also attend an orientation party for theatre students Monday evening.
McCarty has had a 30-year career performing in films, television, soap operas, commercials, Broadway, off-Broadway, national tours, summer repertory and summer stock.
Based in Los Angeles for the past seven years, McCarty lived in New York for 20 years allowing him to gain insight into the differences of show business on both coasts.
McCarty just completed a one year engagement in the Los Angeles production of the Broadway musical "Ragtime," playing J.P. Morgan. He also had roles in the Broadway productions of "Amadeus," "Big River," "Sweeney Todd" and "Oliver."
This past season, McCarty had a leading role on the NBC series "Sleepwalkers." He has a recurring role on the upcoming CBS series "Texarkana" starring Sam Elliot and Judith Ivey. McCarty has had more than 50 guest starring roles on shows including "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Murphy Brown," "Living Single" and "Murder One."
McCarty has worked in films with Robert DeNiro, Ed Harris, Bill Pullman and Vanessa Redgrave. He has worked with some of the most prominent directors and authors including Steven Spielberg, Stephen Sondheim, Steven Bochco, Sir Peter Hall, Bob Fosse, Jerry Zaks, Des McAnuff, Frank Galati and Terrence McNally.
McCarty earned his bachelor's degree at Indiana University and his master's at Michigan State University. He taught acting and directing for three years at the University of Louisville, and would someday like to return to university teaching.
