FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Dennette Derby McDermott, assistant professor of flute at Northwestern State University will be featured in a chamber recital Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Other performers include violinists Paul Lundin and Hong Chen, cellist Ruth Drummond, Adrienne Moffit-Smith on viola and pianist Dr. Russell Hirshfield, an NSU faculty member. Lundin and Moffit-Smith are adjunct faculty at Northwestern. Drummond, Moffit-Smith and Lundin are members of the Shreveport Symphony. Chen is a graduate student at NSU from China.
The program will include "Sonata for Flute and Piano" by Poulenc, Trio for Flute, Viola and Cello" by Roussel, "Evocations de Slovakia" by Karl Husa for flute, viola and cello and "A Night Piece" by Arthur Foote for string quartet and flute.
"Evocations de Slovakia" will be performed at the request of Husa, a Czech composer. Husa heard McDermott perform last year at a conference at Sam Houston State University and sent her the music. The original version was written in 1951 while the composer was living in Paris. Husa scored the work for clarinet, viola and cello. The version McDermott will perform will use flute instead of clarinet, a typical instrumentation of a Slovak dance folk ensemble.
