FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -Student media leaders have been selected for the 2006-2007 academic year at Northwestern State University.

Lindsay Larcom of Austin, Texas, will be editor of the student yearbook, Potpourri. Jamie Webb of New Orleans will be editor of the Current Sauce, the student newspaper. Clayton Welch of Grand Cane was named manager of KNWD-FM, the campus radio station.

Larcom, a senior journalism major with a public relations concentration, spent the last two years as a staff writer with the Potpourri.

Potpourri received a "First Place Award with Special Merit" in the 2005 national yearbook competition sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association. The 2005 yearbook also received the award for Best College Yearbook Nationwide for a college or university with an enrollment of 2500 or more students.

Potpourri has also been named a Silver Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association annual student media competition.

"I know I have big shoes to fill, but I know I am up to the challenge," said Larcom. "I want the yearbook to be something that is looked at as a way of remembering the year and isn't just collecting dust on a bookshelf."

Larcom said she has worked closely with editors over the past two years and has developed ideas on producing an interesting publication.

"College is a time that can be life changing," she said. "People begin to understand how they fit into society and likely meet the people who will be their spouse and future friends. The Potpourri will be able to transport them to that time."

The theme of the 2007 edition will be "Legacies." The book will cover March 2006 to March 2007 and bases its theme on the accomplishments of NSU's men's basketball team, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Iowa in the first round, gaining national attention for the university.

"The accomplishments of the basketball team had a major impact on the university and we want to explore the legacy they will leave along with the legacy created by others at Northwestern," said Larcom.

Welch, a senior journalism major, is in his second year at the station.

"I want to see KNWD participating more in activities put on by the Student Activities Board and Student Government Association. We want to get our name out and support the community," said Welch.

According to Welch, the station has a new Web site and is looking into doing pod casts and experimenting with other media.

"We want to upload news onto our site each day and make news available to students when they want it," said Welch. "We will have our schedule posted, so listeners will know when their favorite show is on. The station will feature a lot of independent artists that won't be featured on commercial radio."

Webb, a senior journalism major, was on the Current Sauce staff last year as a senior editor and staff writer. She contributed to the paper the previous year.

"I hope to learn from my experiences this year," she said. "I hope to cover student activities in a way that will want students to be more involved. I also want student to learn more about the campus through their newspaper. This is a learning opportunity for all of us on staff."
