NATCHITOCHES-A scholarship has been set up at the Northwestern State University Foundation to honor alumnus Elizabeth Posey Mooney of Roswell, N. Mex. Mooney, a 1978 graduate of Northwestern is a former resident of Alexandria.

The Elizabeth Posey Mooney Endowed Scholarship will assist a freshman student from Rapides Parish majoring in physical education or special education. Interest earned from the endowment will fund the scholarship.

Mooney, a native of Mobile, Ala., moved with her family to Louisiana at an early age. She graduated from Alexandria Senior High School and came to NSU. While at Northwestern, Mooney was a member of the Baptist Student Union, Student Union Governing Board and Purple Jackets. She was also chosen as Miss NSU by her fellow students. During her time at the university, she met her future husband Rick, who she married in 1977. Rick Mooney is a graduate of NSU and LSU Medical School in Shreveport. He is a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist.

"The Mooneys are generous, caring people and we deeply appreciate their gift," said Dr. Chris Maggio, director of Alumni and Development at Northwestern. "Rick and Elizabeth Mooney's donation will touch countless lives for years to come by helping a future educator prepare to enter the classroom. We are honored to be associated with such accomplished people who are willing to assist others."

Mooney earned a bachelor's in physical education with a minor in special education. She was a special education and physical education teacher in Shreveport for several years. After her family moved to Roswell, she worked as a special education teacher and cheerleader coach.
