NATCHITOCHES- Marianna Spicer-Brooks, director of News Standards and Practices at CNN, will speak about ethics in the media during the Northwestern State University Department of Journalism's spring News Makers and Shakers Forum Monday, April 19 at 4 p.m. The Forum will be in the Ora G. Williams Studio (Room 142) of Kyser Hall. The forum is free and open to the public.
Spicer-Brooks began her career with CNN in 1994. She started as a weekend supervising producer in Washington, D.C. and was promoted to senior producer one year later. In this position, she supervised story development, edited scripts and worked with correspondents, producers and tape editors on daily and long-term stories. In 1999, she was named director of CNN's News Standards and Practices office in Atlanta, Spicer-Brooks serves as deputy to Executive Vice President Rick Davis and her office develops and oversees news standards for all CNN news operations, cable, radio and Internet.
A graduate in journalism from Ohio Wesleyan University, Spicer-Brooks' first worked as a public information officer with University of Maryland Medical Center. From there, she had several producing positions in Washington, D.C. with CBS News, ABC News and ABC affiliate WJLA-TV. She has produced; associate produced and executive produced such shows as "Face the Nation," "This Week With David Brinkley," "60 Minutes," "CBS Reports" and others.
Spicer-Brooks also won five Washington Regional Emmy Awards during the years of 1981 to 1983 and a National Emmy Award in 1987.
