NATCHITOCHES-Get in better shape while having fun with several upcoming non-credit classes offered by Northwestern State University's Office of Electronic and Continuing Education.

Classes on water aerobics and basic training Pilates will begin Wednesday, Jan. 21.

The water aerobics class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Nesom Natatorium. The fee for the class, which will run through May 7, is $75. Lori Eilts is the instructor.

The workout will consist of simple low-impact exercises done in the water. The program is designed to promote and maintain cardio-respiratory fitness, strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Arthritic and/or pregnant women can greatly benefit from this class.

Basic Training Pilates will be taught on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. in Room 127 of the Health and Human Performance Building. Rebecca Morgan is the instructor. Pilates is a dynamic system of exercise created for the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body. Pilates is a no impact workout that leaves the individual refreshed and invigorated. The workout was originally designed to help injured soldiers retain muscle strength and recover quickly. Later it was used by injured professional dancers.

The Cajun dance class will be held on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. from Jan. 26 ­ March 8 in the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. Billy and Bobbye Keyes are the instructors. There is a fee of $75 per couple.

In the class, participants can experience the fun and excitement of Cajun music as they learn the Cajun two-step, waltz and jig. The class is oriented toward those who have never Cajun danced and after six weeks, participants should be able to do the waltz and jig at the intermediate to advanced level. The class is limited to those 18 years or older and couples only. As a follow-up to the course, field trips to Lafayette/Eunice area are offered.

A class on ballroom dancing will begin Wednesday, Feb. 4. The class will be on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. The fee is $75 per couple. Ben and Brigit Sandidge are the instructors. The class will teach the participants basic steps in the waltz, foxtrot, the cha-cha and tango. The emphasis will be on basic steps danced in a dynamic, variable way. Any age group may participate.
