NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University's Division of Continuing Education will offer courses on kenpo karate and water areobics along with an Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course in September.

A course on kenpo karate will be taught beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will be taught until Dec. 7 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in Room 127 of the Health and Human Performance Building on NSU's Natchitoches campus.

Bruce Adams will teach the course. Kenpo karate teaches how to manuever so that the opponent is unwittingly placed in a vunerable position. It employs kicks, puches, blocks, judo, throws, locks, takedowns and more. According to Adams, kenpo karate can help develop coordination, discipline and self-confidence.

Each age group will be divided into advanced and beginners. The fee for the course is $80.

Water aerobics will be taught on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. ­ 10 a.m. at the Nesom Natatorium. The course runs from Sept. 6 through Dec. 7. Cost for the course is $75. Lori Eilts is the instructor.

The workout consists of simple low-impact exercises executed in the water. It is designed to promote and maintain cardiorespiratory fitness, strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. It is recommended for arthritic or pregnant women.

An Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course will be offered in Mansfield beginning Sept. 26. The course will be held at Mansfield Middle School and run through Jan. 31. The class will be taught two evenings a week from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. There is a fee of $395 for the course plus the costs of textbooks.

Upon completion of the class, students will be eligible to take the National Registry Test to become certified as an EMT Basic. Course work will include 144 hours of classroom training, 12 hours of clinicals in a hospital emergency room and 12 hours of field training in an ambulance.

Requirements to enroll include a passing grade on the TABE Test. This test can be taken on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Mansfield Middle School for a fee of $5. Participants the course must be at least 17 (18 prior to taking the National Registry Exam). Those taking part must also present a copy of a high school diploma of GED, have a copy of current immunization records and have a statement from a physician regarding physical condition. Participants must also have a copy of the American Heart Health Care Provider or equivalent. This course will be offered at Mansfield Middle School on Sept. 20-21 beginning at 6 p.m. for a fee of $2.
