FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Winners of the NSU Concerto Competition will be featured as part of the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra concert Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Douglas Bakenhus is the conductor.

Featured soloists will be Lindsay Braun on clarinet, Rachel Hagar on flute, soprano Cara Waring, Stephen Pruett on marimba and pianist Alexandra Ognahuska.

"This concert will include a variety of works including those from the classical and romantic periods, vocal works, a Hungarian flute piece and a modern work," said Bakenhus. "The works the students will perform were selected by them for the Concerto Competition."

The concert will open with Procession of Nobles from Mlada by Rimsky- Korsakov. Braun will be featured on a movement from Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet in A Minor. Hagar will perform A.F. Doppler's Fantaisie pastorale hongroise.

Waring will be featured on Je dis, que rien ne mepouvante from Bizet's Carmen and Regnava nel silenzio from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti. Pruett will perform a movement from Concertino for Marimba and Orchestra by Paul Creston.

Ognahuska will perform a movement from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1.

"This concert provides an excellent opportunity for the Concerto Competition winners to perform with a symphony orchestra. It is something they will always remember," said Bakenhus. "It is also a good opportunity to the orchestra to learn new works and expand their repertoire. The students also enjoy the chance to see some of their peers step out and perform in a featured role."

Tickets to the concert are $10. NSU and Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts students are admitted free.
