NATCHITOCHES - Courses in investing, Cajun dance and medical coding are among the offerings by Northwestern State University's Department of Continuing Education in February.
A Cajun dance course will be taught on Monday evenings from Feb. 5 until March 19. The class will be held in the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. The fee is $70 per couple. Bobbie and Billy Keyes are the instructors. Dances to be taught include the Cajun two-step, waltz and jigg. By the end of the course, participants should be doing the steps at the intermediate to advanced level.
The official course for those wishing to be a notary in Natchitoches, Red River or Sabine parishes will be taught beginning Monday. Feb. 12. The class will be in Room 217 of Russell Hall. There is an $80 fee for the class plus an optional $50 material fee. Attorney C. Rodney Harrington will present an overview of Louisiana Civil Law as it applies to a notary public.
"Taking Control: A Financial Management Workshop for Women" will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. until noon in Room 218 of Russell Hall. Instructor Barbara D. Sepulvado will teach principles that can assist women at any stage of their life. She will help teach participants how to set financial goals, find the right investments, plan for retirement, reduce taxes and more. There is a $20 fee plus a $15 material fee.
The fundamentals of investing will be presented in a two-evening course on Feb. 20 and 22 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.. The class will be held in Room 218 of Russell Hall. There is a $40 fee for the class. William H. Cross and Sharon Sampite' are the instructors. Those taking the class will learn how to create an investment plan, where to invest, investment concepts and asset allocation.
The class will also teach basics such as reading stock tables, research reports, stock and bond terminology and the basic taxation of investments. Retirement accounts including the IRA, SEP-IRA, SIMPLE, 403(b) and 401 (k) will also be discussed.
Architect James C. Bridges will teach a continuing education course for residential contractors Thursday, Feb. 22. The class will be from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. in Room 217 of Russell Hall. There is a $70 fee for the course. Bridges will provide an overview of building codes and regulations affecting the construction for a residential project, liabilities and issues for contractors during the contract period.
A course covering the basics of medical technology will be taught beginning Tuesday, Feb. 27. The class will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. in Room 224 of Russell Hall on NSU's Natchitoches campus. There is a $600 fee for the course.
In the entry-level course, students will be prepared to enter the medical coding field. Further education with an advanced course of study is recommended for those who wish to enter into a position with coding as a primary duty.
