FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Editor Michael Garrett will offer prospective writers a few tips that could help them sell a short story, novel or screenplay in a series of non-credit courses to be offered through Northwestern State University's Office of Continuing Education Aug. 11-13. Each class will be taught in Room 211 of Russell Hall.
Garrett will teach "Screen Writing for Movies," Friday, Aug. 11 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The course will teach proper screenplay manuscript format, how to develop a story, create roles and how to contact an agent. The fee for the class is $49.
On Saturday, Aug. 12, Garrett will present "Writing a Novel that Sells," from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There is a $75 fee for the course. In the workshop, Garrett will instruct participants on how to write a novel that publishers want. Garrett maintains that many authors write well enough to sell a novel, but are not meeting a publisher's needs.
Garrett will teach another course, "Short Story and Novel Critique," on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The fee for the course is $49. Garrett maintains manuscripts are rejected in the first few pages rarely with an explanation. In the class, Garrett will evaluate manuscripts, explain why rejections were likely and teach how the problem can be corrected.
On Sunday, Aug. 13, Garrett will teach "Creating a Novel from Scratch" from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The workshop will provide ideas for producing a marketable novel. Garrett will brainstorm with those in the class to develop a novel outline, characters, appropriate viewpoint and structure. He will also help individuals write an opening scene and formulate a marketing plan. The fee for the class is $75.
