NATCHITOCHES - The Community Wellness Project at Northwestern State University will sponsor Summer Institute 2000 June 14-16 at the Hampton Inn Louisiana Convention Center on MacArthur Dr. in Alexandria.

The Institute will focus on HIV/AIDS prevention and tobacco cessation techniques that can be employed within the community. Sessions will be held on June 14-15 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on June 16 from 8 a.m. until noon. Administrators, teachers (including science, health prevention specialists and special education teachers), counselors, social workers, school psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, public health employees, adolescent peer leaders and CBOs could benefit from the training.

Sponsors include the Louisiana Department of Education HIV/AIDS Project, the Center for Disease Control, the Office of Public Health, NSU Departments of Psychology and Health and Human Performance and the Philadelphia Center.

Full scholarships, which include meals, lodging, training and curriculum will be provided by the Center for Disease Control, the Office of Public Health, and Department of Education. The tracks for training will be filled on first come, first serve basis. After all scholarships have been awarded, registration is available at $300 plus curriculum cost.

Individual tracks for the seminar include "Personal and Social Skills," "Get Real About AIDS" "Be Proud! Be Responsible" and "Strategies to Empower Youth to Reduce Their Risk for AIDS." Each of these tracks has been identified by the Centers for Disease Control as a "Program That Works."

The Community Wellness Project at NSU was founded to disseminate information regarding the latest techniques and strategies in prevention and awareness about HIV/AIDS, mental health disorders, substance abuse, violence, suicide, eating disorders and other health-related issues.
