NATCHITOCHES - The Fourth Annual NSU Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, April 21. Junior high and high school bands and combos from around Louisiana and Texas will perform. Admission is free and open to the public.
The NSU Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. with guest artist Trent Austin, a faculty member at the University of Southern Maine. Austin is a noted jazz and classical artist and has performed with a number of well known jazz artists. He recently was a featured soloist with the Artie Shaw Orchestra.
Participating bands include Parkway High of Bossier City, Leesville Junior High, Dutchtown High of Geismar, Erath High, Little Cypress-Mauriceville of Orange, the Merry-Pine Band respresenting Merryville High and Rosepine High, Lafayette High and Acadiana High of Lafayette and James Bowie High of Arlington, Texas. Also performing will be Them Katz Jazz of Natchitoches.
The Orchestra will perform "Fascinating Rhythm" by Ira and George Gershwin and arranged by Sammy Nestico, "Pegasus" by Hank Levy, "Misty" by Johnny Burke and Earl Garner and arranged by Jerry Novak.
Austin will join the orchestra on "I Want a Little Girl"
arranged by Alan Faust, "A Night in Tunisia" by Dizzy
Gillespie and arranged by Slide Hampton, "Serenade to a Bus
Seat" by Clark Terry and arranged by Stephen Guerra and "MacArthur
Park" by Jim Webb.
