NATCHITOCHES -The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Tickets to the concert are $10. NSU and Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts students are admitted free. Douglas Bakenhus is the conductor.
The concert is in conjunction with the annual Southeast Horn Workshop and will feature soloists Gail Williams of Northwestern University, Adam Unsworth of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Michelle Stebleton of Florida State University and Patrick Hughes of the University of Texas.
The program consists of The Duke of Marlborough Fanfare by Percy Grainger, Sonata for Strings and Two Horns by Nicolas Maw featuring Unsworth and Williams, Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio and Schumann's Concertstuck for Four Horns and Orchestra featuring Williams, Unsworth, Hughes and Stebleton.
Williams is professor of horn at Northwestern University. She has held numerous orchestral and chamber music positions, including member and associate principal horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and former principal horn of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She is a founding member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Summit Brass.
Unsworth joined the Philadelphia Orchestra horn section in 1998. Prior to his appointment in Philadelphia, he spent three years with the Detroit Symphony. He also served as guest principal horn with the Saint Louis Symphony and the Colorado Music Festival. An active recitalist and clinician, he has appeared at universities throughout the United States and as a soloist and chamber musician at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.
Stebleton is an active teacher, soloist and chamber musician all over the world, having performed in 22 counties. She has shared second prize in both the professional and natural horn divisions of the American Horn Competition, and currently serves as an artist/clinician for Holton-Leblanc horns. She is a charter member of the Santo Domingo Music Festival orchestra, conducted by Phillipe Entremont, and joined the faculty of the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival (Prague) last year.
Hughes is currently Assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Texas-Austin. He was previously at the University of New Mexico, where he performed with the New Mexico Woodwinds and the New Mexico Brass Quintet. He was also principal horn in the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and still performs regularly with Santa Fe Pro Musica. He has held prior teaching appointments at Ithaca College and University of New York in Fredonia.
