NATCHITOCHES -Historian Dr. Michael Martin will be guest speaker during the annual spring banquet of the Northwestern State University chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society. Martin's speech will be "Why the Longs Still Matter." The event will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 14.
Martin earned his Ph.D. in history at the University of Arkansas in 2003. He is an assistant professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has published one book, "Chemical Engineering at the University of Arkansas: A Centennial History." In addition to public history, his teaching interests include Louisiana, public history and race relations in the southern United States. His most recent award is the Spirit of Eternity Award, given by the Epsilon-Xi Phi Alpha Theta Chapter.
The banquet will be held at Merci Beaucoup Restaurant in Natchitoches. Tickets for the meal are $20 and available by contacting Dr. Susan Dollar at (318) 357-6195 or e-mailing her at dollars@nsula.edu. Deadline for tickets is noon Monday, April 11.
Phi Alpha Theta was founded at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, March 17, 1921. Northwestern's chapter was formed March 21, 1934. This semester, the club initiated seven new members. They are Jerry Sanders, Belinda Diehl and Jerimie Betts of Leesville, Christopher Gilson and Amanda Burke of Natchitoches, Jamie Sandifer of Benton, and Stephanie LeRay of Thibodaux.
