FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Three Northwestern State University students along with two faculty members made presentations at the Philological Association of Louisiana conference held recently in Shreveport.
NSU students Derek Foster of Deville, Rebecca Farabough and Francisco Lluna presented research at the professional conference. Northwestern Assistant Professors of English Dr. Rocky J. Colavito and Dr. Lisa Abney also made presentations. Assistant Professor of English Dr. Suzanne Green attended the conference.
Foster, an English major in the Louisiana Scholars' College from Deville, made a presentation, "Emma, Strong-Willed and Determined: Austen's Manipulation of Feminism and Comedy." In his work, Foster looked at feminism and how a novel's setting can affect and form character development. He argued that the character created by Jane Austen didn't lose her identity in marriage.
Farabough, an English major in the Scholars' College from Shreveport, delivered a paper "To Dream or to Read." Her research was on the applications of science fiction and if those applications were expected to become reality. Farabough used the example of teleporting, a method of moving an object or person without physical contact by psychokinesis. Teleporting is not practical now, but could be in the future.
The presentations by Foster and Farabough were originally developed in classroom assignments.
Lluna, a graduate student in writing and linguistics, gave a paper, "To Be in Old English: Creating a Dialectal Paradigm."
Abney's paper was titled "Narrative Structure in George Session Perry's 'Hold Autumn in Your Hand.'" Colavito gave a presentation, "Rhetoric Goes Retro: Nostalgia, Pathos and Identity with Remembrance of Things Past."
The conference drew scholars and students from throughout Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas and Kentucky, who presented academic work in a variety of disciplines.
