FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES -The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra will hold its annual Pops Concert Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Friedman Student Union Ballroom. Douglas Bakenhus is the conductor. Tickets are $30 a person. Tables of eight and 10 are available.
The theme for the concert is "Out of This World." Most of the music will have the word "star" in the title or be related to space or a time or place outside our world.
"In putting together this concert, the objective was to put together a program that would appeal to a variety of people," said Bakenhus. "Many of these songs are well known and will be recognizable."
The concert will include music from 2001 Space Odyssey, Star Wars, Star Trek and Phantom of the Opera. The orchestra will also perform Mars from the Planets, Stardust and Over the Rainbow.
Voice faculty members Terrie Sanders and Phyllis Seigler will be featured along with students from the NSU Opera Workshop on Barcarolle from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman. The orchestra will also perform two patriotic songs, The Star Spangled Banner and Stars and Stripes Forever.
"This concert is about providing entertainment and having fun with the music," said Bakenhus. "It is important for our students to understand and appreciate music as well as its entertainment value."
A dance will be held after the concert with Jimmy Maxwell and his Orchestra featuring vocalist Julie Jules. Maxwell leads one of New Orleans' top party bands and has played with entertainers including Harry Connick Jr., Reba McIntyre, The Dixie Cups, The Drifters and Frankie Ford.
Jimmy Maxwell and his Orchestra has also played for presidents George W. Bush, Clinton and Reagan. The orchestra has also performed in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Ireland, Mexico and France.
