FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Good tickets are still available for the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra's Pops Concert Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Prather Coliseum.

Reserved tables are available at $120 for a table of eight or $150 for a table of 10. The deadline for reservations is Monday, Oct. 1. Tables will be available at 6 p.m. on the evening of the concert. Stadium seating is available for $10.

The concert will also feature the NSU Jazz Orchestra which will perform Big Band dance tunes.

The orchestra under the direction of Richard Rose will perform selections from "Les Miserables," "Memory" from "Cats," the "National Emblem March" and music by Richard Rodgers and George Gershwin. Also on the program is a medley of Broadway music, selections from "A Chorus Line," "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music," music from "Apollo13," "Can Can" from "Orpheus and the Underworld" and Berlioz's "Hungarian March."

Rose, a former guest conductor of the NNSO, will be in his first concert as conductor.

"I am looking forward to conducting this concert. There is a wealth of great music written for the theatre and the movies and I am glad we can present it to the people of Natchitoches and Northwestern," said Rose. "We are going to have an evening of relaxing, enjoyable music featuring two outstanding musical groups."

The Jazz Orchestra will perform music made popular by many of the top Big Bands and composers including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Johnny Mercer, Sammy Nestico and more.

Among the tunes to be played are "Take the A Train," "In the Mood," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "That Old Black Magic," and "April in Paris."

"The program will emphasize dance music. We will give the audience the type of program they would have gotten at a big band concert in the 50's," said Rodriguez. "All the music is outstanding. Many of the tunes are still in the repertoire of the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra which shows the staying power of the music."

Sponsors for the Jazz Orchestra included Howard Fitzhugh of the Pioneer Pub in Natchitoches and Bro. Michael David Elvestrom. The Jazz Orchestra also received assistance from Bill Brent of the Mrs. H.D. Dear and Alice E. Dear Department of Creative and Performing Arts and the NSU Student Activities Board.
