FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University's powerlifting team made its debut this past weekend, competing in the collegiate division of the 15th annual ASH Invitational Powermeet in Alexandria. Five of the lifters had totals that qualified them for the collegiate national championship.
Qualifiers in the men's division were Chet Hurley in the 114-pound class, Derek Toro in the 132-pound class and Marcus King in the 275-pound class. Hurley, Toro and King are all from Natchitoches.
In the women's competition, Leah Gooden of Alexandria qualified in the 181-pound class and Bridgette Davis of Sorrento was a qualifier in the super heavyweight class.
Gooden was also recognized as the "Outstanding Collegiate Lifter" from among all the collegiate women at the meet.
"I am very excited about the potential these lifters have," said Craig Bauer, an assistant professor of mathematics at NSU who is coaching the team. "This was the first competition Marcus has entered and he looked like a veteran. We are training Derek to set a new national record in deadlift. Derek is a freshman, so he has a great deal of time to achieve his goals."
The team has additional competition planned for this semester. The powerlifting
squad has also set up a website at http://www.angelfire.com/la2/nsuplc/index.html.
