FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -Northwestern State University has extended its scholarship deadline for the 2006-2007 academic year until Friday, Dec. 16, according to Assistant Director of University Recruiting for High Schools April Jordan. All scholarship applications postmarked on or before Dec. 16 will receive expedited consideration. The scholarship application packet should include an application for admission, the $20 application fee, ACT/SAT scores and a high school transcript. Letters of recommendation are not required but are encouraged.

Students affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita are encouraged to take advantage of the extended deadline. Applications for these students will be accepted through the Christmas holidays and all documents will be processed on January 3, 2006 when the University re-opens after the holiday break. Jordan said that students who have taken the December ACT test should submit their applications even if they have not received their test scores yet and forward the scores to NSU as soon as they receive them if they didn't request that scores be sent to Northwestern.

"Northwestern is known for awarding some of the best scholarship packages to graduating seniors in the state and in East Texas," said Jordan. "Academic and leadership scholarships are awarded based on grade point averages, ACT/SAT test scores, and student involvement. NSU believes that it's important that scholarships not only be awarded to students with the highest grades and test scores, but also to the student that is involved in their school and community. The scale for scholarship awards recognizes that not all learning takes place in the classroom and a well rounded student will do well inside and outside of the classroom."
