NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University will host the annual State Quiz Bowl Tournament Saturday, March 28. Thirty-two teams will compete in four divisions determined by the size of the school. The four divisional winners will compete for the overall state championship and a berth in the Panasonic National Quiz Bowl Tournament to be held in Orlando in June.
Participating high schools include: Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans, Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Couteau, Alexandria Senior High, Anacoco, Baton Rouge Magnet, Berwick, Boothville-Venice, C.E. Byrd of Shreveport, Caddo Magnet of Shreveport, Catholic of New Iberia and Catholic of Baton Rouge.
Other high schools qualifying for the state tournament are: Cedar Creek of Ruston, Converse, E.D. White of Thibodaux, Episcopal School of Acadiana, Eunice, False River Academy of New Roads, Menard of Alexandria, Isidore Newman of New Orleans, Jena, Jesuit of New Orleans and Leesville.
Other schools competing for the state championship are: Minden, Natchitoches Central, Opelousas Catholic, Port Sulphur, River Oaks of Monroe, St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Terrebonne, Vandebilt Catholic of Houma, Zachary and Zwolle.
Caddo Magnet is the defending state champion. Episcopal School of Acadiana won the Division IV championship last year.
The finals will be broadcast on NSU Cable Channel 22 in Natchitoches. Doug Joubert will be the moderator.
The State Quiz Bowl Tournament is sponsored by the Louisiana Association for Academic Competition. Mike Landry of St. Mary's High School is the organization's president.
Among the sponsors of the tournament is Josten's which supplies trophies and First National Bank of Lake Charles which awards silver dollars to each member of the winning team.
