NATCHITOCHES- The Louisiana Association for Academic Competition will sponsor the 11th annual High School Quiz Bowl State Championship at Northwestern State University Saturday, April 6. Competition will be held in Kyser Hall and the Friedman Student Union on the NSU campus. Students from 32 high schools will be competing, according to tournament director Abbie Landry.
Competition begins at 8:30 a.m. The final three rounds will be held in the Ora G. Williams Studio (Room 142) in Kyser Hall beginning at 3:30 p.m. Doug Joubert will serve as moderator.
One hundred schools were eligible to compete in the regional tournaments held throughout the state on March 2. The top two schools in the16 regions will compete in the state tournament.
Participating schools are Caddo Magnet, Captain Shreve, Zachary, Baton Rouge Magnet, Destrehan, Hahnville, Jesuit, Rummel, Alexandria Senior and Bolton.
Also competing for the state championship are: St. Louis High,
Opelousas Catholic, Breaux Bridge, Catholic of Baton Rouge, Vandebilt
Catholic, Blenk,
Cedar Creek, St. Frederick, Many and Florien.
Other state tournament qualifiers are: Menard, Episcopal School
of Acadiana,
Newman, Sacred Heart of New Orleans, River Oaks, Prairie View
Academy, St. Mary's of Natchitoches, Glenbrook, Sacred Heart of
Grand Coteau, False River Academy,
Boothville-Venice and Phoenix.
Competing schools are divided into four divisions based on school size. The top four schools in each division will be state champions. Those four teams will then compete to determine which school will win the Jerry Hickman Award and represent the state of Louisiana in the Panasonic Academic Challenge in June. Vandebilt Catholic won the competition last year.
Members of the faculty and staff from Watson Library as well
as university
faculty, staff, alumni, and other volunteers will serve as timekeepers,
scorekeepers, and moderators for the event.
