NATCHITOCHES - The Louisiana Creole Heritage Center will present the first Preservation Recognition Awards in conjunction with the annual Creole Heritage Day celebration.
The awards will be presented at the Creole Heritage Day Opening Ceremony Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in Magale Recital on the NSU campus. Individuals and organizations across the state that have played a major role in the preservation and promotion of our Louisiana culture and history will be recognized.
The Advisory Board for the Louisiana Creole Heritage Center made the designations for these awards. Recipients will be coming from Slidell, New Orleans, Lake Charles, Point Coupee, Frilot Cove, Grand Marais, Shreveport, Marksville, Natchitoches, Cane River, and Sherman, Texas.
Speakers will include Winston DeCuir of Baton Rouge, John Sarpy of Shreveport, and B. Christophe Landry-Hoegan of New Iberia. Refreshments will be served following the presentation at the Creole Heritage Center in Room 116 of Kyser Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The Ninth Annual Creole Heritage Day will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 at St. Augustine Catholic Church on La. Hwy. 484 in Natchez, La. (across the River from the Melrose Plantation). The event is sponsored by the St. Augustine Historical Society and the Creole Heritage Center.
As part of Creole Heritage Day, the St. Augustine Historical Society will present Creole Heritage Preservation Plaques during Creole Heritage Day to further tribute and recognize the efforts and endeavors of those being recognized. The award presentation will be conducted during the 4 p.m. program on Saturday. Admission to Creole Heritage Day is $7 for adults, children 7 to 17 $2 and children 6 and under are admitted free of charge.
