NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University has named five new admissions counselors for the 1998-99 year, according to Director of Enrollment Services Chris Maggio. The new admissions counselors are Rebecca Jo Anderson, Lauren Brown, Anthony Kennedy, Albert Middleton and Susanna Smith.

"I am glad these five talented people are joining our staff. They each have unique abilities which will help promote Northwestern," said Maggio. "I look forward to working with our staff as they meet with students and parents to let them know what Northwestern has to offer."

Anderson, who is graduate of Riverdale Academy, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication in 1996. For the past two years, she was a production assistant and associate producer at TCI of Louisiana. Anderson was a production assistant at WGMB-Fox 44. She also was employed in the LSU Athletic Department as an athletic drug test monitor and worked for the Louisiana Senate as a committee clerk during two legislative sessions.

"I attended Northwestern during the summer and was really impressed with the personal attention the students received," said Anderson, who is from Coushatta. "I enjoy traveling and public speaking and the opportunity to be closer to home is good for me."

Brown, who is from Denham Springs, received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at NSU in May. She is in Northwestern's graduate program in school guidance and counseling. While an undergraduate at Northwestern, she was marketing director in the Office of Recreational Sports, promoting leisure activities to NSU's students. An honor roll student, Brown was on the "Straight Talk" Panel for parents at Northwestern's Freshman Connection program. She was also a member of the Wellness Center Search Committee.

"I've learned a lot at Northwestern, and this is one way to give something back to the university," said Brown, who is a graduate of Live Oak High School in Watson. "The small-town atmosphere at Northwestern is very appealing. Students who come here have the opportunity to get involved in a number of activities."

Kennedy, who is from Livonia, earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from NSU in May. He worked in the Office of Admissions, assisting the admissions counselors in a variety of tasks. Kennedy also worked in the Office of New Student Programs as a freshman connector, aiding incoming freshman who were making the transition to college. He was selected as Mr. NSU for 1997-98 and was also a presidential ambassador.

" I always loved the family atmosphere at Northwestern. It's easy to get involved and make friends," said Kennedy. "That's something I want to show students who are considering Northwestern."

Middleton grew up in Natchitoches. He earned a Bachelor of Art in English and did graduate work. Middleton has worked as a systems engineer development and technical associate with Electronic Data Systems, an assistant sports director with Carnival Cruise Line and an independent agent for American Communications Network, Inc.

"Growing up in Natchitoches, I was always around Northwestern," said Middleton. "The atmosphere here is tremendous. Students come first here. If someone wants to succeed, the university provides those opportunities."

Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Student Personnel Services from Northwestern. She worked in the Office of Admissions and Recruiting last year as an intern. This past summer she was assistant director of summer cheerleading camps at Northwestern. She was also Northwestern's cheerleading coach for two years. Smith was an NSU Yell Leader for four years and was elected to the Homecoming Court three times.

"Our whole group has a lot of enthusiasm and we are ready to begin meeting and working with students," she said. "I've seen the challenging parts of the job, and I've seen the rewards the counselors get from working with the students who end up coming here.

"I enjoy being a part of Northwestern. Students are treated as individuals and are in a friendly, supportive atmosphere."
