FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -Northwestern State University has received three grants worth $173,475 from the Board of Regents Support Fund.

"Enhancing Student Learning through Utilization of Advanced Technologies in Field Studies on Wetlands and Aquatic Systems," was funded for $73,961. Juliette Delabbio and Samuel Marshall are principal investigators.

Delabbio and Marshall's project is designed to enhance student learning through advanced technologies on field studies on wetlands and aquatic ecosystems. The researchers said the most pressing environmental issues in Louisiana concern water and student research work can contribute to the state's intellectual collateral. Field studies will be conducted at Northwestern's Aquaculture Research Center, which is adjacent to the Red and Cane rivers and the Red River National Wildlife Refuge.

The project will enhance the Department of Biological Sciences' offerings in ecological studies; help senior students develop proficiency in the use of advanced technologies monitoring aquatic ecosystems and involve students in innovative deployment of technologies across biological disciplines.

"Creating Portable Electronic English Classrooms" received $10,514 in funding. Helaine Razovsky, Lisa Abney and Alan Bauman are principal investigators.

English faculty at NSU will have portable electronic classrooms with tablet personal computers and portable in-focus projectors due to the grant by Razovsky, Abney and Bauman. Many classrooms at Northwestern do not contain built in equipment. The grant will allow faculty to do PowerPoint presentations, use the Internet, and in other ways instruct and model for students how to use technology and develop expertise in processes crucial to English instruction in composition, literature, folklore and linguistics.

A third grant by Dr. ElizaBeth Guin, "Enhancement of the Laboratory and Field Components of the Northwestern State Heritage Resources Program," received $89,000 in funding.
